The European Union aims to significantly reduce the emission of harmful materials in the member states and the crude oil based fuel dependence of Europe.

The European Commission developed the White Paper of Transport in 2011, in which forty specific measures are presented for the implementation of the Single European Transport Area. The document is in compliance with the major objectives of the European alternative fuels strategy COM(2013)17 published by the European Parliament and the European Council.

The White Paper of Transport also formulates long-term objectives. The Union plans to reduce the emission of harmful materials and the oil dependence of Europe by sixty percent by 2050 while the document sets the target of eliminating traditional fuelled vehicles from cities by the middle of the century.
